"IEZZI" CART

English Flag English Version

FS-type siren warning deviceCarrellino Iezzi in uso

Description: Portable, detachable trolley for checking track geometric parameters:

  • gauge from 1432 mm to 1469 mm;
  • cant from 0 mm to 200 mm

Presumably built in 1946 by OFFICINE dott. Ing. R. IEZZI on Via Assisi, Rome, as a "SURVEYING MACHINE FOR RAILWAY TRACKS," as designated by the label on the trolley.

The Iezzi trolley is an instrument used to continuously measure track gauge and cant. Since it is a lightweight device and is pushed by hand during the survey, the measurement is performed on an unloaded track; the measured gauge and cant values will not differ from those measured with a level gauge.

However, the possibility of continuously plotting the trend of these two geometric characteristics on a strip of paper makes this instrument useful whenever it is necessary to have a more complete view of the track than can be obtained by taking measurements only at singular points and when it is necessary to store the measured values to compare them with those detected at different times.

The Iezzi carriage includes:

  1. Disegno Iezzia telescopic gauge measurement device consisting of two cylinders that slide inside each other and carry sensing rollers at one end that rest on the inside faces of the rails.
    The two cylinders are held in contact with the rails by a spring and are connected, one to the paper drum and the other to the writing stylus, so their relative motion can be recorded, and thus the track gauge. The sensing rollers reach a depth of 18 mm below the rail, so the gauge measurement is taken at that depth. Burrs obviously affect the gauge measurement;

  2. a pendular device for measuring cant. As seen in the previous paragraph, a pendulum mounted on a stationary vehicle (the Iezzi trolley can be considered such due to its small survey speed) that is on a track with a superelevation h rotates around its axis of oscillation through an angle equal to the transverse slope of the track. The pendulum's displacements will then be proportional to the superelevation of the track, and the graph drawn by the pendulum will always have a trend with concave curves of opposite sign to those of the curve.
