Description: "Millesimo" Nail for woodencross-bars

An iron nail indicating the date of manufacture of the wooden sleepers, positioned in the centre of the sleeper. The vertical number corresponds to the last two digits of the year of manufacture. The horizontal number, where present, ranges from 1 to 6 and indicates the treatment site where the sleepers were treated in the creosote oil vats. 

Within the Venice and Trieste Division of the State Railways, in addition to the Mestre Timber Impregnation Plant, there was also the San Giorgio di Nogaro (UD) Timber Impregnation Plant, which was decommissioned towards the end of the 1980s. The last Timber Impregnation Plant to close was that of Foligno.

Wooden sleepers impregnated with creosote oil under pressure (known as ‘carboninio’ in the trade) have been gradually phased out from Italian railway tracks for two main reasons:

• The creosote oil used to impregnate the wooden sleepers has been recognised as a carcinogen;
• The cost of wooden sleepers is more than double that of new prestressed reinforced concrete sleepers.
