FS-type siren warning device

A bascule (known as “bassacuna” in the Venetian dialect) derives from the French word “bascule”. It is a balance comprising several levers interconnected in such a way that, using small weights, it can balance loads tens or even hundreds of times greater. 

A diagram of how it works is shown in the figure below: the load a, resting on platform b, is divided into two parts which are transferred, respectively, at A to lever OB, which has its fulcrum at O, and, via the connecting rod CE, at E to lever DG, which has its fulcrum at point F. 

Provided the ratio OA:OB = EF:DF is maintained, if, for example, EF = FG/10, the weight c placed on the pan will balance a load ten times its weight placed on the platform.
