STEAM LOCOMOTIVE LAMP

A kerosene lamp used for signaling trains. The back of the lamp holds two colored glass panes, one green and the other red. These are placed in front of the white glass pane depending on the signal the train is carrying.

From Article 13, paragraph 1 of the 1909 Signal Regulations:

[…] at night, passenger trains carry: at the front of the locomotive, at the level of the bumpers, two white lights, and non-passenger trains also carry a green light at the base of the smokestack; at the rear, two lights at the top, one on each side, and at the bottom—preferably centered—on the rear wall of the last car; all three tail lights emit red light toward the rear; the two side lights emit more white light toward the front[…]
