TELESCOPIC COLLIMATOR AND "APPIO" LEVEL GAUGE

Before performing the precise transverse and longitudinal leveling (and alignment) of the track by tamping the ties with ballast, the precise leveling marks must be established using the following tools:

• Theodolite;
• Measuring staff with a graduated sighting rod;
• Level gauge.

We will describe the components of these instruments to facilitate their use.

Theodolite:

"APPIO" level gauge

The “Appio” level gauge consists of a hollow rod made of rectangular-section steel profile measuring 40x30 mm. At the ends are two angle brackets: one fixed and the other a sliding bracket, both equipped with hemispherical stop buttons for measuring the gauge. A small plate of insulating material is inserted between the fixed angle bracket and the steel profile to provide electrical insulation. Near the end of the rod bearing the movable angle bracket, a spirit level is incorporated that can be tilted in a vertical plane perpendicular to the rails, since its base is hinged to the instrument’s rod on one side, while on the other it is constantly pressed by a spring against the tip of a micrometer screw. The “Appio” leveling gauge is highly suitable for precision leveling because, thanks to the presence of the sighting mark, the instrument combines a level and a staff in a single unit.
