2. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
2.1 General Characteristics:
A solid, crystalline substance, colorless or clear due to the presence of impurities, with a characteristic odor. It reacts rapidly with water to produce acetylene.
2.2 Melting Point and Density:
Calcium carbide has a melting point above 2500°C and a specific gravity of 2.22 kg/dm3.
2.3 Flammability:
Inherently nonflammable, it reacts rapidly with water to form acetylene, which is highly flammable.
2.4 Chemical Reaction:
Calcium carbide reacts with water to produce acetylene and calcium hydroxide, in an exothermic reaction.
3 HAZARDOUS CHARACTERISTICS
Calcium carbide is considered a hazardous substance due to its tendency to react easily with water to produce acetylene. For this reason, its use is regulated by specific laws. Since contact with moisture is the main source of hazard, special precautions must be taken for its storage and transportation.
Furthermore, in the event of a fire, the use of water as a fire extinguisher is prohibited.
4 PRODUCTION
Calcium carbide is produced in special furnaces by reacting carbon with calcium oxide at high temperatures.
5 USE
Calcium carbide is the raw material for the production of acetylene; it is also used in the production of calcium cyanamide.
