MANUAL SAWS
English Version
A device for sawing rails with manual feed. Used both for sawing rails on site and for cutting rails off-site in the yard. The tool was operated by a trackman from the Works team, who moved the saw back and forth along the rail, cutting the piece with precision. The depth of cut was facilitated by a pin on a toothed wheel which, with each back-and-forth cycle of the saw handle, lowered the blade slowly until the rail was completely cut through. The saw operator was assisted by a trackman who constantly sprayed the blade with water to prevent it from overheating.
These hand-operated saws were replaced in the 1970s by petrol-powered blade saws and subsequently by disc saws mounted on a support frame.
Classification: category 744, serial number 556 – hand-operated rail saws
